 The holoku of old Hawaii was an elegant, if conservative, formal tea dress, with its high neck, long sleeves, and lace. This delightful beach wedding dress was the first holoku in our original Pikake Bridal Collection. We named it the Ku`uipo (sweetheart) Wedding Holoku, a modern, stylish, slightly daring version of the Hawaiian holoku for the 21st century.
Backless, fully lined with a neck clasp and gorgeous ruffled train (which has a little "handle" as all holokus do so the wearer can walk freely), this holoku is truly as stunning as it is unique.
Maile, the character in Blue Hawaii who married Elvis at the end of the movie, wore a holoku as her wedding gown as Elvis and Maile serenaded each other with the Hawaiian Wedding Song as they floated down a river on a canoe toward wedded bliss. Elvis wore a long sleeved white shirt and white pants with a red sash (though his sash color actually should have matched the color of Maile's holoku), considered formal wear in Hawaii. The Holoku Ball, held by the Hawaiian Civic Club, still celebrates the Hawaiian Holoku every year.
